Oktoberfest München bei Nacht Blick über die Wiesn

GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich:
Munich OktoberfestThe Munich Oktoberfest is one of the largest festivals of the world. Over 6 millions of indigenous people and tourists are visiting the "Wiesn" (Munich Oktoberfest) every year. Besides a wide range of thrill rides, there are beer tents, in which an extremely tasty brewed beer with higher alcohol content (approx. 6-7%) is brewed especially for the Oktoberfest. On 17th October 1810 a horse race took place on a wide meadow in celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Since that time the meadow is called: Theresienwiese.

The swivelling figures are representing a tournament, which took place at Marienplatz in 1568 and a „Schäfflertanz“ (the cooper’s dance), which had be formed during the plague from 1515 until 1517.

Munich - GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich

Everybody knows that Munich is more than a city of those flowers, which are growing on beer mugs during the Oktoberfest. The town praises itself primarily because of the high recreational value: Some people are „selling“ themself as employees for an inadequate price just to live in this popular city and to travel to the Prealpine Lakes in the south already on the early Friday afternoon: Ammersee, Starnberger See, Tegernsee, Schliersee…

But the dynasty of „Wittelsbacher“ was well aware of the flat region of the north: The castles of Schleißheim, Lustheim, Haimhausen, Dachau, Nymphenburg und Blutenburg are real artistic gems.

Surrounded by arcade courses, the German Theatre Museum, frescos from the history of the Wittelsbach dynasty, Munich’s Residence and the Bavarian State Chancellery can be found here.

Schloss Schleissheim München
Theatinerkirche in München

GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich:
Munich Schleißheim: Castle of SchleißheimBuilt as a summer residence by Bavarian Electors in the 17th and 18th Century, the Castle of Schleißheim consists of spacious gardens, in which three particular castles are located: The Old Castle of Schleißheim, the New Castle of Schleißheim and the Castle of Lustheim.

GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich:
Munich - Theatinerkirche: The foundation-stone of the Theatinerkirche, which is situated at the Odeonsplatz, was laid in 1663. The Church has risen from a promise, that Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, the wife of Elector Ferdinand Maria, has made in 1659. In appreciation of the birth of Hereditary Prince, she would have established the „most beautiful and valuable church“ as collegiate church for the Theatiner.

In the New Castle of Schleißheim, a sprawling Renaissance building begun by Elector Max Emanuel in 1701, palace concerts are taking place in the frescoed ballroom every summer. A significant part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections is exposed in the castle. The Small Castle of Lustheim (1687) comprises a famous collection of Meissen porcelain. The Castle of Nymphenburg, start of building in 1664, consists of several, affiliated pavilion buildings in Renaissance style and some smaller, but interesting buildings in a huge park.

Munich is, according to the poet Jean Paul, only composed of "central points".

No one knows exactly what to visit at first: the German Museum, this documentation of the technical age or the national museum, the Pinakothek, which is strieving with the collections of paintings of the Louvre or the Hermitage, or the Glyptothek with its worthily presented antique art sculptures, the Marienplatz (St. Mary's Square), on which the new (!) old tower of the Town Hall competes with the Neo-Gothic Town Hall (1867 - 1908). Should you be present at an organ concert in the Theatinerkirche (1663 - 1768) or in the enchanting Cuvilliestheater (1753), amidst the powerful residence complex of a Mozart opera? Nobody will resent the generous Karl Theodor that he spent a lot of money for the creation of the English Garden (around 1790), which remembers of the most beautiful gardens in London.

Tegernsee mit Schloss Tegernsee
Wendelsteinbahn

Tegernsee

Wendelsteinbahn

From Munich to the Koenigsee lake - GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich

From Munich, Bad Reichenhall is reached quickly: by motorway Munich - Salzburg. Just before Holzkirchen, there is a nice view on the Tegernsee and the nearby mountains. Driving over the 228 meter long and 68 meter high Mangfall Bridge is very impressive, too. At the Seehamer Lake, there are parkings and opportunities to swim. After reaching Irschenberg, the whole mountain landscape can be lionised: from the Tegernsee Mountains to the Wendelstein to the Traunstein region.

After Rosenheim, a 307 meter long Bridge passes over the Inn. Later, there is a general view from a hill on the Chiemsee basin and soon after that, the motorway leads along the Chiemsee, so that the forests of the Herreninsel and the monastery church of the Fraueninsel are clearly visible. Coming from the motorway it is possible to swim in the lake. After Neukirchen, an altitude from 703 meter will be reached from where you can not only have a look at the Dachstein, but also to the Bavarian Forest. Just before the Austrian border, the junction "Bad Reichenhall" leads off.

Bad Reichenhall - GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich

The state spa Reichenhall is surrounded by high mountains. It is established for asthma, throat-, nose- and larynx disease because of its intensive saltwater springs.

The St Zeno Monastery with the biggest Romanesque basilica (1228) from Upper Bavaria is the the jewel in cultural history of this town. The western door made of white and red marble reminds of portals in Trient and Verona. Lying lions serve as pedestal for the outer pillars. The Portal has a tympanum of enthroned Mother of God and is surrounded by high reliefs. The church interior has been rebuilt after a fire at the beginning of the 16th Century. The carved Coronation of Mary at the high altar (about 1520) is indeed the high point of this room. But details like choir stalls and panel paintings from the same period are also admirable. In the Romanesque cloister there is a relief figure which should represent the Emperor Friedrich I. Barbarossa.

The high mountains from Bad Reichenhall are a comfortable experience: A chair lift leads to the 1614 meter high "Predigtstuhl".

Königssee Berchtesgaden

GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich:
Konigsee Lake Berchtesgaden: Deeply embedded between rock faces. During the creation of the world, the Lord must have had taken a little more time for the Konigsee Lake. Deeply embedded between steeply rising rock faces, the Konigsee Lake with its crystalline water is situated in the middle of the national park of Berchtesgaden. Silence is the greatest luxury in our turbulent time. The high-toned silence, which arises from the Konigsee Lake, captivates each visitor as soon as they leave the parking and enter one of the saucy motor boats and face the lake for the first time. Any hecticness and any noisy action remains ashore.

Konigsee Lake - GERMANY - Bavaria - Upper Bavaria - Munich

Highlight and resting point of this journey is the Konigsee Lake 5 kilometers away, which is to be discovered by a pedestrian way along the Konigsee Lake Ache. Those who are entering a ship to escape from the tumult of tourists, is going to feel themselves transferred on a Nothern Norway fjord. But you are not going to meet a statue of the wholy Nepomuk at the riverside and you are not going to discover a baroque pilgrimage chapel like St Bartholomä (12th Century).

Perhaps it is the brilliance between the gloomy lake and the serene chapel, which induces any tourist to take a photo of this scene. The subject is indeed lay-safe. You can not miss the unusual.
